Whether you have worn a kilt before, or if this is your first time, here is an overview of what a kilt outfit comprises of:

Kilt – knee length tartan garment (please note that this is NOT a skirt and the pleats are to go at the back!)  Traditionally each man will wear his own Scottish clan tartan but it is now common to see all of the groomsmen in the same tartan

Belt – worn over the kilt usually with an embossed buckle

Jacket – usually either an Argyle which is a similar shape to a blazer or a Bonnie Prince Charlie (BPC) which is shorter at the front than at the back.  Traditionally the BPC is an evening jacket and the Argyle is a day jacket as the Argyle style is more informal

Waistcoat – either a 3 button if wearing BPC jacket or a 5 button if wearing an Argyl jacket

Shirt – this can be any colour but usually the grooms wedding party will all be in either white or black

Tie - traditionally a BPC is worn with a bowtie and an Argyle Jacket is worn with a tie or ruche tie

Sporran – pouch hung around the waist from a chain or leather strap to sit at the front of the kilt.  Usually made of seal skin or embossed leather.

Kilt hose – knee length socks (usually black or white for a wedding and again can be chosen to match the shirt colour and the grooms wedding party).  The socks are folded down at the knee and worn with garter flashes in the same tartan as the kilt or in a chosen plain colour to match the tie

Sgian dubh – small sheathed knife worn at the top of the right hose.  This can either be a real knife or ‘dummy’ knife made from plastic.  Be careful if carrying in hand luggage on a plane!

Ghillie brogues – black shoes with long laces and no tongue.  The laces are crossed around the front and back of the ankle and lower calf and tied at front.

Brogues – black shoes with tongue and normal tying laces.
